Game Songs

Every game as a chiptune · built from play-by-play, xG and the score

Pick a game and press play. Each period becomes eight bars of music, so a whole game lasts under a minute. Home shots ring out high on the right, away shots lower on the left, every goal gets a fanfare, and the chords follow who's winning.

The mapping

How a game becomes a song

One sixteenth note is 9.375 seconds of hockey, so each 20-minute period is exactly eight bars. The song is the home team's, in C major.

PartWhat drives itWhat you hear
HomeEvery home shot attemptOne note per attempt on a bright pulse, panned right. Higher notes are better chances (more xG). Blocked and missed shots are soft; shots on goal ring longer.
AwayEvery away shot attemptThe same, an octave lower on a thinner pulse, panned left.
GoalsEach goalA four-note fanfare in the scorer's part and a crash cymbal. Home goals rise in major; away goals in minor.
ChordsThe scoreHome ahead: C and G. Tied: F and G, never quite resolving. Home behind: A minor and E minor. A two-goal margin doubles the bass.
TensionStrengthA power play turns the chord suspended and the hats run every step. An empty net turns it diminished.
DrumsThe clock and penaltiesA steady beat; a crash opens each period and a clap marks each penalty. Shootouts get a drum roll.
TempoPaceFaster for games with more shot attempts per 60 minutes, from 112 to 152 beats a minute.
Last barThe resultThe home team's major chord if they won, a minor one if they lost.

About these songs

  • The data is the same as Game Film's: NHL play-by-play, this site's xG model and the play-by-play strength codes. The score is made in your browser when you pick a game.
  • When two attempts by one team fall in the same 9.375-second step, the bigger chance plays. Every goal plays, and the check that ships with the page confirms each one lands on its own step.
  • Shootout attempts aren't on the timeline, as in Game Film; the shootout is a one-bar drum roll before the final chord.
  • "Remix in Chiptab" opens the score in Chiptab, the chip-music editor these songs are written for, where you can change any note.
